METROPOLITAN COLLEGE SUPPORTS SCHOOL STUDENTS AT BRUNS ACADEMY

A carload of school supplies delivered to support academic achievement

CHARLOTTE, NC – Metro C.A.R.E.S. (Campus and Allies Reaching Each Student), an extension of Metropolitan College at Johnson C. Smith University’s outreach initiatives, successfully delivered a carload donation of school supplies to Bruns Academy. The items were donated by Metropolitan College faculty, staff, students, alumni, Orthocarolina, the Magistrates and Mecklenburg County Courts.

Metropolitan College is constantly looking for ways to connect and expand the scope of the service it offers to the community, by going beyond its core focus on adult students. As a result of this determination to further advance community engagement, one of the “Seven Expectations” at Johnson C. Smith University, Metropolitan College joined forces with key individuals and organizations to assist Bruns Academy’s students.

“We realized that our mission is fully aligned with Bruns Academy’s commitment to ‘empowering ALL scholars and maximizing their academic success through character development, rigorous instruction, and accountable relationships,’ said Dr. Laura McLean, Dean of Metropolitan College. We are also conscious that in order to achieve this goal, these young students need to feel nurtured and supported, which is why we chose to help make sure they have their basic school supplies needs covered, so they can focus on their learning process and enjoy it,” she added.

Bruns Academy is one of CMS’ schools closest to Johnson C. Smith University’s Campus. It serves 809 students in grades Kindergarten through 8th grade. As part of the assistance, Metropolitan College organized a group of members of the staff and students to welcome the kids on their first day of school.

“As members of the community we are called to protect and support the younger generations and serve as role models, so they know they can achieve their dreams and be successful in life, in spite of any possible hardships or challenges they might be facing. We just wanted them to know that we care and that we are here to support them in their journey”, added Dr. McLean.

Metro C.A.R.E.S. will continue engaging with Bruns Academy. This school supply donation was estimated at approximately $400.
