Free six-week workshop for small businesses will be held at JCSU

Carolina Small Business Development Fund in partnership with Johnson C. Smith University will be offering a new FREE six-week training program for small businesses and entrepreneurs in the Charlotte area that are interested in procurement opportunities with the City of Charlotte.

Below please take a quick look on the contents that will be covered during the workshop:

MARCH 12: WORKING WITH THE CITY

The first step in the training is becoming familiar with the resources, departments, and personnel essential to procuring city contracts. Learn about the certifications available, their benefits and eligibility requirements. Instructor: Lapronda Spann. 

APRIL 2: CAPABILITY STATEMENT

A capability statement is an essential document for the general contractor and city engagement process. Learn how to create a capability statement that summarizes skills, experience, capacity and highlights references. Instructor: Mark Mills.

MARCH 19: FINANCIALS & CAPITAL

Tackle basic accounting principles for accurate record-keeping and evaluate financial strength including balance sheet, income statement and projections. Assess the need for capital and what options might work best. Instructor: Barry Gupton and Ron Fisher.

APRIL 9: BUSINESS LEADERSHIP SKILLS

Performing the work is only half of the business. Learn about successfully managing staff, mental persistence, the importance of networking, personal presentation and other leadership skills that enhance growth and scale. Instructor: Mic Alexander.

MARCH 26: ENSURING PROFITABLE BIDS

Learn to anticipate overhead, material and equipment costs with realistic timelines to ensure bid that returns a profitable bottom line that can foster job creation. A key focus of this workshop will be required insurances. Instructor: Anita Staton.

APRIL 16: OUTLOOK & GRADUATION

The program concludes with a panel of guest vendors sharing their experiences and tips for success working with the city. There will be a Q&A session and a networking opportunity with current vendors. Instructor: Dr. Shanté Williams.
