Gates Foundation video highlights Metropolitan College

Johnson C. Smith University’s Metropolitan College of Professional Studies received a visit by a team from The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Sept. 5-7, 2017, looking for stories to be included in a short video documentary.
Dr. Laura McLean, dean of Metropolitan College of Professional Studies, talked about the mission of the College, from its beginnings back in 2009 up to today. McLean described the wrap-around services that nontraditional students find in the College and added that “the students receive another family the moment they enroll with us. We become their mentors, coaches, counselors and friends.”
McLean explained the practices that enable the college to offer six degree programs; various certificate programs; launch the university’s first online degrees in 2015; maintain and expand evening and flexible schedules; and increase the diversity of the students, faculty and staff.
Justina Geter ’18, a social work major at Metropolitan College, also shared her testimony. Geter has advanced her professional endeavors as an advocate for adolescents and education, and has expanded her network and influence while a student at JCSU. Click here to watch the video.
