Metropolitan College supports the success of the Hispanic Community

For inmediate Release: September 20, 2016

Charlotte, North Carolina. Johnson C. Smith University’s Metropolitan College was present for the second year in a row at the 2016 La Noticia Latin American Excelente Awards. “It is essential for Metropolitan College to continue building partnerships to increase the awareness of educational opportunities for adult learners through our online and on-campus offerings, as well as through certificate programs such as our English Program Caminos Hacia El Exito”, said Dr. Laura McLean, Dean of Metropolitan College.

Metropolitan College has been continuously working to further strengthen the bonds of friendship and collaboration with the Hispanic community. For this, the College has created programs like Caminos Hacia el Exito, and has intensified the relationships and conversations with key partners in this sector of the community.   Locally, Hispanics constitute 12.7 percent of Mecklenburg’s population, an estimated 128,473 people among 1.01 million residents. This trend offers a unique opportunity to expand the scope of the University’s impact upon the wider community, invoking the ideals of servant leadership and inclusion.

“Our vision is to help Hispanics overcome the burden of language in the first place, so they can have a better experience in the community and continue to thrive and gain access to better social, educational and work opportunities. We are certain that this empowerment process brings benefits to everyone in our community as a whole”, added Dr. McLean.

During the event, Metropolitan College’s representatives had the opportunity to network with numerous key individuals and organizations. These efforts will allow the College to have a stronger voice and position its goals for community engagement, diversity and inclusion more effectively. “We have identified a significantly big group of Hispanics who are looking for opportunities to complete degrees, but the language has been a barrier.  The flexible options in Metropolitan College will allow these same adult learners to enroll in our on-campus or online programs”, added Dr. McLean.  Also, the various businesses and organizations that were present at the Gala heard about the degree offerings at Metropolitan College that could serve as development opportunities and incentives for their employees.

Ms. Astrid Chirinos, Member of JCSU’s Board of Trustees, joined Metropolitan College’s table as one of the special guests.
